Fiberglass Composites and How the Industry Has Evolved Using Spray Coating Systems

Fiberglass Composites and How the Industry Has Evolved Using Spray Coating Systems

ItemTitle

Fiberglass is used in a number of different industries because of its versatility, durability and cost-effectiveness. Once fiberglass hardens, it is very resistant to damage and can be repaired if impact damage or wear does occur. Fiberglass is also highly moldable, allowing it to be shaped into nearly any design. It doesn't rust and rarely corrodes. As a result, it typically lasts longer than wood, metal and non-reinforced plastic when placed in a corrosive environment. It does not conduct electricity and it does not react chemically with other materials around it. The process of making fiberglass and repairing it has evolved over the years and spray coating systems have made fiberglass even faster and easier to work with.

Origins

Fiberglass used to be made by hand-laying sheets down into a mold. A resin was then applied to them with a roller and then mixed with a hardener to bond the individual sheets together. It was imperative to not let air seep in between the sheets or else the structural integrity of the entire piece would be threatened. The sheets were then compressed by hand or using a tool to ensure they remained tightly together during the drying and hardening process. The process of putting the sheets together had to be done quickly or else the resin would start drying too soon, ruining the entire piece before it was completed.

As time went on, more advanced methods were used to construct fiberglass pieces and panels. High temperature resins were designed so the fiberglass wouldn't start drying or hardening until it was warmed in an oven. This allowed workers more time to assemble the piece without the risk of early curing. Vacuum systems removed air bubbles from between the fiberglass sheets, ensuring a more consistent structural integrity.

Resins became more advanced as well, using polymers of epoxy, vinyl ester, phenolic, methyl methacrylate, or polyester as hardening and strengthening agents. Mineral fillers became more common as a means of reducing flammability.

While the process of hand-laying fiberglass was effective and reliable, it was a time consuming endeavor. Spray coating systems eliminated those problems by rapidly speeding up the fiberglass construction and repair process without sacrificing quality or reliability.

Spray Systems

Spray systems still require a mold when a fiberglass piece is first made because the mold gives the piece its shape. However, instead of a worker having to apply a resin to the fiberglass sheets by hand using a roller or other tool, he can use a spray system to rapidly coat each layer of the fiberglass and ensure an even, thorough application. The resin and the reinforced glass are sometimes applied through separate spray systems or they can be combined into a single spray nozzle. Combining the two streams is called "chopping" and is accomplished with specialized spray equipment called a chopper gun, such as the Graco sprayer. A layer of material is placed into the mold, sprayed and then another layer gets added to it. Filling materials such as wood or foam are sometimes placed in between sheets, depending on what the piece is being used for.

The evolution of fiberglass and the spray systems that are now commonly used in their application were driven by the needs of both the automotive and the boating industries. Boats are often made out of fiberglass because the material is lightweight and resistant to moisture. The automotive industry was looking for a durable alternative to steel that was more cost-effective. Spray systems made the use of fiberglass in both of these endeavors a lot faster and more practical.

This also benefited the repair process. It was previously difficult to fill small cracks with a resin using a hand tool or roller. A spray nozzle can now be fitted with an attachment to fit right into a small crack or opening to get the polymers exactly where they need to be for the most reliable and durable repair possible. This also saves money on replacements because repair work is possible now that wouldn't have been earlier in fiberglass's evolution.

Gel Coat

Gel coat is often applied as the outer layer of fiberglass to give it its glossy finish. The gel coat also provides a protective finish the fiberglass as well. Spray systems allow a gel coat to be applied much faster and with greater consistency than ever before, making fiberglass maintenance a do-it-yourself process even for people not normally familiar with fiberglass construction or usage.

Today's Usage

Fiberglass is now used in a lot more than just cars and boats. Surfboards are now often made with fiberglass and the spray resins help protect the board against the harsh salts of the ocean and the impact damage of small rocks and stones in the waves. Some bicycles are now made of fiberglass because the reduced weight helps increase speed. Many circuit boards are fitted with fiberglass, which works as an insulator. Spray systems are useful in these instances of very small pieces to ensure proper application of hardeners without over-saturating the piece.

Asphalt is sometimes reinforced with fiberglass layers. Chemical plants often construct their holding tanks out of fiberglass because of its corrosion resistance and because it won't react dangerously with any other chemical or material.

Spray Gun Finishing Equipment - What Spray Gun is Best For Your Application?

Spray Gun Finishing Equipment - What Spray Gun is Best For Your Application?

Spray gun painting can be used for both manufacturing processes as well as many household projects. There are two different types of air gun spraying: the manual operation method and the automatic process. In the manual method the air gun sprayer is hand held and moved back and forth over the surface, each stroke overlapping the last to ensure a continuous coat. In the automatic process the gun head is attached to a mounting block and delivers a stream of paint from that position.

There are a few different types of spray guns to use depending on your needs:

HVLP Spray Guns: HVLP which stands for high volume low pressure are similar to a conventional spray gun using a compressor to supply the air. The spray gun itself requires low pressure (LP) and a higher volume (HV) of air is used to aerosolize and propel the paint at a lower air pressure. HVLP Spray Gun Systems are most commonly used in the automotive, marine, architectural coating, furniture finishing, and cosmetic industry.

LVLP Spray Guns: LVLP which stands for low volume low pressure uses a lower volume of air to atomize the paint at the cap. These spray guns, like HVLP systems, operate at low pressure but also have a low volume of paint coating. Unlike HVLP guns LVLP guns can be used with a smaller compressor. These spray gun systems are great for small shops, woodworkers, or smaller projects in general.

Electrostatic Spray Painting: Electrostatic painting is when an electrically charged powder is sprayed on a surface that is charged with the opposite electrical charge. The whole is then baked to properly attach paint. It's much more durable than liquid paint and it's an environmentally friendly process because there are no solvents to evaporate into the air or go down the drain. Electrostatic painting can be used on most plastics and any kind of metals. This type of painting is commonly used to paint car bodies, bicycles, elevators, and some office equipment.

Airless Spray Guns: Airless Spray Guns are connected to a high pressure pump to atomize the coating using different tip sizes to reach desired atomization and spray pattern size. Airless spray gun coatings penetrate better into pits and crevices, and have a thick wet coating which reduces the number of applications. These systems are commonly used by contract painters to paint heavy duty industrial, chemical, and marine coatings and linings.

Air Assisted Airless Spray Guns: Air Assisted Airless Spray Guns are very similar to the airless gun in that high fluid pressures force the coating through a small orifice in the spray gun cap. The gun differs from the airless spray gun in that the fluid pressures are lower. These spray guns provide high transfer rate and increase application speed and is best used with flat line applications. These spray guns are commonly found in factory finish shops.

Airless Paint Sprayer Product Review

The magnum x7 has an auto-prime feature which makes it quick and easy to get started. This feature also eliminates any problems caused by debris left in the unit due to poor cleanup. You can also adjust the spray pressure easily and select different operating modes.

The unit itself weighs 26 pounds (12 kgs) and sits on a frame that has two heavy duty wheels which makes it very easy to wheel around. Also, there is a paint pail hook on the front of the machine which allows you to move the paint pail at the same time, minimizing spills. There is a also a sturdy handle that doubles as a hose rack and folds down for compact storage.

Whilst Airless Paint Sprayers will save you a lot of time, traditionally the most time consuming aspect was cleaning the machine. However, with the Magnum x7, even this side of things has been made quicker by the power flush cleaning adapter. Essentially, all you need to do is connect your garden hose to the suction siphon of the sprayer and pump fresh water through the unit - Job Done!

For the technically minded, the Graco Magnum x7 will spray.31 Gallons per minute, the maximum spray tip size is.017 inch, and the 5/8th horsepower motor will run off a standard houshold power outlet or a 1500 Watt Generator.

If you are still a bit daunted about the idea of airless spraying then don't worry - the Graco Magnum x7 even comes with an instructional DVD which covers the setup, spraying and cleanup steps. Once you master the art of using a paint sprayer you will never look back. And best of all you will get your weekends back!

Garage Floor Paint

Garage Floor Paint

Many people neglect their floors in the garage, which usually ends up in the cracking of the concrete floors, mildew growth and other unwanted problems. Perfect garage floors can be achieved with the right choice of garage floor paint, the right preparation and proper application of the product.

Garage Floor Paint

Garage Floor Paint

Garage Floor Paint

Garage Floor Paint

Garage Floor Paint

To prepare garage floors for painting the floors have to be cleaned with a compound such as TSP and washed properly. The trick is to let the floors dry completely before painting them. There is a simple way of checking when your concrete or other porous floors are ready to be painting. Take a piece of plastic and tape it to the floor from all sides. Let it stay for no more than twenty-four hours. Condensation on the plastic will mean it still has moisture inside. Dry plastic, however, will mean it is ready for next step - painting.

When you choose your paint make sure to take the paint that is specific for garage floors. If you will purchase regular floor paint it will peel off because of the high temperature and friction of car Tires. Most of the stores carry latex and oil paints for garage floors. Oil paint will create a harder and more durable finish; however in general, oil paints are more slippery. Latex paint contains lower level of VOC and dries Faster.

Application should be done with a high quality roller. Temperature should not be less than 10 degrees or more than 20 degrees. Ideally, it is best to let the paint cure before using the floors. For oil paints curing time is usually more than latex applications.

With the right garage floor paint your concrete floors will stay protected and look great for a long time to come.

Many Airless spray units are powered by a large main pumping unit, that is carried or wheeled around. This main unit pumps the paint to the spraygun handpiece via a lengthy spray hose. This system is ideal for large painting tasks because of the large volumes of paint needed. However, a large spraygun is not always required for smaller tasks. This is where the Graco TrueCoat Pro comes in handy.

To begin, you simply line the paint cup with a disposable plastic liner. This enables you to easily dispose of unused paint at the end of your project and greatly reduces the time it takes to clean up. Next, you fill the cup with paint, re-attach the cup to the Unit, prime the pump (which takes 3 seconds) and you're ready to spray.

The Graco TrueCoat Pro is perfect for inside and outside painting tasks, including fences, walls, weatherboards, architraving, doors etc. It will spray a variety of materials including acrylic and oil based paints, primers, stains, varnishes, Latex paints, Enamels and Urethanes. Best of all, thinning the paint is not compulsory with the Truecoat Pro System.

As a rule cleaning up a spraygun can take up a lot of your precious time. However, the task of cleaning the TrueCoat is basic. First you simply remove the plastic liner from the cup. Next, fill the cup with water and flush it through the pump. Finally, replace the water with the pump armour solution (to increase pump life) and ... Cleaning is complete!

A great advanTAGe of the TrueCoat Pro is that is easy to use and doesn't require long leads or large machines to power it, however keep in mind that each battery will only spray around 1 Gallon of paint (3.8 ltrs) The spray package comes complete with two 18 Volt re-Chargeable batteries, recharge time being about 45 minutes per battery. This is fine for humble projects, but it obviously would not be suitable for continuous spraying of dozens of gallons of paint.

The benefits of Airless spraying are endless. All in all, you cannot beat the satisfaction that the Airless spray technique delivers when doing those painfull painting Jobs. When using airless sprayguns, never forget to wear a respirator and protect surrounding objects from overspray.

All in all, an airless spraygun unit is an essential addition to anyone's tool kit, especially if you don't like the idea of wasting your life by painting the old fashioned way.

Basement Paint Color Ideas

Basement Paint Color Ideas

You are redesigning your baseMent and you need to pick out the right colors to paint the walls. Since the baseMent is probably one of the darkest rooms in the house, picking the right colors to paint it is very important. The color (s) you choose can determine whether your basement becomes the warm exciting room you envision or the gloomy underbelly of the house.

Basement Paint Color Ideas

Basement Paint Color Ideas

When you sit down to choose the color you want your basement, you may want to think about these ways we respond to different colors:

Black

Black usually stands for darkness and despAir and it is often associated with death. The color black absorbs light and unless you want your basement to be a depressing place, black should be used sparingly.

White

Much the opposite ofblack, white reflects almost 85% of light. White tends to make rooms seem brighter and larger than rooms painted with other colors. Unfortunately, white walls are easily the most vulnerable to scraping and marking.

Red

The darker shades of red create a sense of warmth. Red also acts to stimulate and energize so it can be a very exciting and vibrant color for a basement. The brighter reds may counterbalance the neutral colors and add life and excitement to the room.

Orange

Orange has some of the same characteristics of red. The brighter the orange the more lively while in the room becomes softer orange tends to make the room more warm and welcoming.

Green

Green can work to balance red and orange. For a basement, a darker shade ofgreen will work much the same as black. It is probably best to stay away from the darker greens and and stay with the lighter shades.

Blue

Blue is said to calm the nervous system and can soften bright rooms. Much like green, if a very dark shade of blue is used it ends up with the same effect as black. The lighter shades of blue make people feel peaceful and comforted.

Yellow

Yellow is a fantastic color that is cheery and stimulating. Lighter yellows work to make rooms feel larger but if overused, it can be too stimulating. Yellow is best used in combination with another color.

An Overview of the Airless Sprayer and How it Works

An Overview of the Airless Sprayer and How it Works

The Airless sprayer is among the most effective paint sprayers available for commercial and residential use. Highly touted for their ability to cover large areas quickly and often in less time than compressed-Air models, Airless spray set ups are top of the line "for their quality and performance.

An Overview of the Airless Sprayer and How it Works

An Overview of the Airless Sprayer and How it Works

Instead of using compressed air to push material out of the spray gun, airless sprayer an uses a piston pump to draw the paint up through the tube and push it through the hose where it is as atomized at the gun and forced out through the tip in a mist. This allows the user to spray thicker materials than most spray guns could handle, as well as produces less overspray.

There are four essential parts to airless sprayers. There is the pump, which canbe one of two kinds, piston or diaphragm. Both pumps perform the same function, but rely on different mechanisms to build necessary pressure. The high pressure hose used is designed to withstand the pressure built up by the pump. The gun comes in a range of grip styles with all being either 2 or 4 finger models. The tip, which regulates paint flow and fan pattern size, comes in a variety of sizes.

Whether you are a do-it-yourselfer looking to spruce up your house, or a paint contractor trying to make your blow and go production blow and go just a bit Faster, there is an airless sprayer designed to fit your needs. Anyone looking to buy an airless sprayer should do some shopping around to find exactly the right model. Some of the more popular brands of spray guns areGraco, Binks, Devibliss, Fuji, and Wagner.

Words of Caution

Airless sprayers should always be cleaned immediately after each use. The tip on the spray gun has a very late opening and the smallest deposits can easily clog it up. For the same reason, all materials should be strained before use.

Take some time before you begin your project to work out your spraying technique and distance away from surface. If you are not familiar with using such a gun you will find yourself causing headaches and messes if you just jump right in without getting the hang of it first.

Airless Paint Sprayers

Airless Paint Sprayers

Airless paint sprayers use a pumping action to force paint through a nozzle at the end of the gun. They produce a misty fog that settles Fast when it comes into contact with Air. These sprayers in various designs and are made by different companies, examples would be the Graco paint sprayers, Wagner paint sprayers, Campbell Hausfeld and of course the Fuji sprayers. They are usually made for outdoor applications and a consumer usually has a choice for either using a large or a small pump.

Airless Paint Sprayers

The airless paint sprayers offer a good finish on wood siding, wood fences, sheds and garages, metal, plaster, lawn furniture, latex among other outdoor surfaces. It would also be important to note here that these sprayers as in three types i.e. the diaphragm pump; which is veryhardy for 'do it yourself' home enthusiasts, piston pump; for professional sprayers, and the Double stroke piston pumps for construction work.

These sprayers come with different price ranges and they can cost anywhere between 0 to ,000 depending on the type of project to be undertaken and the amount of horse power required. All said and done, before settling for a particular spray gun one should check the air and fluid controls to make sure that they work perfectly.

You should also ensure that the gun is easy to clean. I would go for a gun that makes spraying a pleasure all the time. After you are done with the Job of painting it is usually advisable to unPlug the gun and release the pressure trapped inside. These is done to avoid accidents that might happen if it is unPlugged by someone else. As a precaution it would also be advisable to keep it out of the reach of children all the time. The damage it can do to your child cannot be overlooked.

It will give a description of the scent and what else one should expect from this fragrance.

Hermes Un Jardin Apres La Mousson is the third fragrance in the "A Garden" series. When you first smell the perfume the first thing that will hit you is that the fragrance is very green. This is supposed to interpret the lush environMent that usually follows the monsoon rains. You will also be able to smell a very subtle scent of watermelon. This note mixed with the greenness creates an opening that is very elegant and not too sweet. As the fragrance grows what develops is a nice floral bouquet scent. In the final drying down sTAGes, the scent becomes a nice spicy and woody scent that is very soft and warm. This is the trademark by which Apres La Mousson is known for. The perfume is able to accomplish this delightful mix due to notes such as ginger, coriander, pepper and vetiver. They all come together to create a fragrance that is lovely.

Because of the earthiness and greenness of the fragrance, it is recomMended to wear it on a warm sunny day. The different ingredients worked very well with the hot and humid conditions of a nice summer day. It feels as if the fragrance was built for it.

Apres La Mousson by Hermes is available at a host of locations. You can find it in some of the more high end department stores as well as various different online websites. The following newborn baby checklist can be used as a guideline in the quest to be prepared for your new arrival. While no checklist will have you prepared for EVERYTHING (like finding out your mother-in-law will be coming to "help" for a few weeks), this one ought to come close!

Clothing - Newborn babies grow into the next size very quickly! Don't go crazy purchasing the tiny newborn Clothing items, or you may find that your baby has outgrown them before he/she has even had a chance to try them on! By the time your baby is about 8-9 pounds, you will need the 3 month old clothing (these will last until your baby is about 12 pounds). Some larger babies even skip the newborn size altogether!

The quantities listed here are based on the assumption that you will be washing your laundry at least 2 times per week.
5-10 newborn sized outfits 2 sweaters 5-7 sleepwear 2-4 wearable blankets or sleep sacks 4-6 onsies Dress clothes 2 pAirs of mittens (for preventing scratches) hats - one for warmth and one for shade Snowsuit - do NOT use when your baby is in his/her car seat 6-10 pAirs of socks (more is better because they are so little that they get lost or "eaten" by the washing machine) accessories - such as shoes, hAir decor, jewelry mild laundry detergent Bathing and Grooming - When my first baby was born, we had very little in the way of baby Supplies - and nothing for bathing. Do you know what we discovered? We didn't really need much. He got perfectly clean when I bathed him in the bathroom sink and washed his hAir with the kitchen sink hose.

So why did I include most of the following items in this newborn baby checklist? Convenience. There is a LOT to be said for convenience when you have a newborn baby in the house!
baby tub or baby bathing sponge 4 baby washcloths 2 hooded towels baby lotion baby brush Infant nail clippers baby shampoo/body wash bath thermoMeter Nursery Items - A beautifully decked-out nursery is a fun way to prepare for your new baby. Giving the baby's room personality and then putting away the items he/she will be using makes it start feeling like he will REALLY be arriving soon! Consider:
Dresser baby size hangers rocking chair cd player with soothing cds night light nursery decor - wall hangings, window coverings, bed skirt Diapering - "Changing a diaper is a lot like getting a present from your grandmother - you're not sure what you've got but you're pretty sure you're not going to like it." (Foxworthy) No baby checklist would be complete without "covering" this.
wet wipes - either commercial or home-made changing table with a water-proof pad 3 washable changing pad covers hand sanitizer diaper rash remedy wipe warmer diaper disposal or diaper pail with liners basket or diaper holder for keeping diapers orderly If using disposable diapers: 10-12 disposable diapers per day OR If using cloth diapers: 24-36 cloth diapers 8-10 diaper covers inserts and liners diaper pins if the chosen system calls for them diaper sprayer Feeding - After you have decided whether you will be breastfeeding or bottle feeding, you will want to consider which items you will need to assist you in growing a healthy baby. Breastfeeding Needs: 3-5 nursing bras nursing pads - washable or disposable breast pump nipple cream breast milk storage containers breast feeing pillow nursing cover 10 burp rags Bottle Feeding Needs: bottles (BPA free) - start with just a few until you know what your baby will prefer nipples (clear silicone) formula - don't stock up until you know it will "agree" with your baby 10 burp rags bottle brush bottle warmer drying rack sterilization bags Sleeping - Newborn babies spend about 18 out of every 24 hours sleeping. At least some of that time you will want to put him/her down to tend to your own needs. Your baby's safety during that time is paramount. Providing a safe, comfortable, familiar place to sleep will help your baby establish good sleeping habits which will in turn facilitate YOUR sleep. You will need:
sleeping place - crib with mattress, portable crib, bassinet, Moses basket, or co-sleeper 2 mattress pads 3 fitted sheets 6-8 receiving blankets baby monitor a small fan for air circulation and white noise Traveling - Whether it is across town or across the country - you will want to show off your baby (or at least re-stock on diapers). Traveling with a newborn is more complicated than grabbing your keys and walking out the door, but you will be prepared for any trip if you have:
car seat diaper bag replaceMent car seat cover stroller baby sling or carrier blankets of varying thicknesses car seat travel bag for air travel portable crib Health - No one likes to think about their baby becoming ill, but sooner or later it is bound to happen. Be prepared by having the following items on hand:
nasal aspirator/bulb syringe petroleum jelly digital thermoMeter rubbing alcohol & q-tips (for umbilical cord care) Infant acetaminophen - use with newborns only under adviseMent of your pediatrician saline nasal spray a great pediatrician Don't forget to add your baby to your health insurance policy! Safety - Your newborn won't be mobile for a few months, but you will want to have safety items in place well before that occurs.
safety gates corner/edge bumpers safety locks outlet covers DevelopMent and Entertainment - Most of your newborn baby's early development will come from the cuddling, singing, talking, and interaction provided by the ones who love him/her the most. A few items that will stimulate and entertain him/her while you are occupied will be beneficial to you both.
baby mobile or a plastic mirror for the crib a few toys of differing textures baby swing and/or baby bouncer baby book for recording all of the milestones A common "rookie mom" mistake is caring for her baby to the exclusion of caring for herself. Don't forget to make "mommy care" a priority, too. Add your favorite bubble bath to your newborn baby checklist - and then use it!

Cloth Diaper Sprayers Make Cleanup a Snap

Cloth Diaper Sprayers Make Cleanup a Snap

Cloth diaper sprayers make it easy to rinse messes off of Cloth diapers. There is no need to dunk diapers in the toilet and they make it easy to rinse the diaper without getting your hands messy.

There are a few things to look at when choosing a sprayer:

Easy Install or Call a Plumber!: Installing your new sprayer should be pretty easy. Most are simple to install, but good instructions that help a lot. Good instructions for installation make it easy to get it right.

Shut-off valve or Toddler Water Fun: A built-in shut off valve is another sign of quality. A shut-off valve is essential to help prevent accidental leaks. It also helps slow down a curious toddler and prevents you from having to mop up after impromptu water fun time.

Oops! I Just Got a Shower or Gentle Spray: Look for a diaper sprayer that has a pressure adjuster. Too much pressure and you may get as wet as the diaper. A pressure adjustMent helps to make it easy to use just the amount of pressure needed to clean the diaper without creating monsoon conditions in your bathroom.

Price or Security: You can go the cheap route or try to make something from what you can find at the hardware store, but that minor savings comes at great risk. The price difference between a cheaper model and a high-quality sprayer is only a few Dollars. The peace of mind of knowing it is not going to leak is worth the extra money. When you are saving hundreds of Dollars (or thousands!) by Cloth diapering, an extra or so to get a diaper sprayer that could save you thousands of dollars in home repAirs makes a lot of sense. If you choose a cheaper sprayer, you may find yourself with much bigger problems. A leaky diaper sprayer could flood your house. Imagine coming home from vacation to find that the diaper sprayer leaked for days and soaked through the ceiling into the room below!
